BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – The University of Akron volleyball team ran into a few roadblocks offensively Saturday night, dropping a 3-0 decision at Bowling Green, 25-19, 25-19, 25-16.
Kelsey Wilson tallied a team-high nine kills while Amanda Bedell and Mary Delich posted six apiece, but it was not quite enough to ignite a spark as BGSU out-hit Akron (6-11, 0-6 MAC) .276 to .039.
Bowling Green (8-9, 5-1 MAC) was led by Danielle Tonyan and Lindsey Butterfield with 10 and nine kills, respectively.
The Zips fell behind early in the match, trailing by as many as 10 points in the first set with the score at 19-9. After coming out of a timeout however, Akron went on an 8-1 run, highlighted by a couple of Wilson kills peppered with Falcon errors, which cut the deficit to three at 20-17.
A Bowling Green service error kept the Zips within reach, still trailing but only by four at the 23-19 mark. But a pair of unforced errors on Akron's side of the net gave the first frame to the Falcons.
The second set was almost a mirror image of the first, as the Zips strung together a similar 7-1 run late in the set after falling behind, 17-9. A service ace from Callie Mack, a kill from Wilson and another Bowling Green attack error forced the Falcons to take a timeout as their lead dwindled to four points.
Akron stifled Bowling Green on its first set point at 24-18 with a big block from Bedell and Delich, but the Falcons countered with a block of their own to go up two sets to none.
Bowling Green scored four straight points to begin the third set, and that would prove to be a gap that Akron would be unable to close completely. A Wilson kill made the score 14-10 still in favor of the Falcons, but BGSU turned around with another 4-0 run and carried its lead to the end of the match.
Jill Paluch led both teams with 13 digs and Karley Kusan dished out 26 assists in the effort.
The Zips return to their home floor for the first time in the month of October next weekend when they host Western Michigan on Friday, Oct. 18 at 7 p.m. and Northern Illinois on Saturday, Oct. 19 at 5 p.m. Friday's contest against WMU at James A. Rhodes Arena will be televised live on Time Warner Cable SportsChannel.
