YPSILANTI, Mich. – Kelsey Wilson delivered a match-high 12 kills and three Zips ended the night with double-figure digs, but Akron was unable to take down Eastern Michigan on Friday, dropping a three-set decision on the road.
Wilson hit .333, followed closely by Alex Cocklin with 11 kills to lead Akron's offense. UA (6-14, 0-9) started off strong in the first set but came up short, 27-25, 25-15, 25-15.
Jill Paluch led the team with 13 digs while Ashley Holder and Tori Lanzillotti tallied 12 apiece, helping Akron out-dig Eastern Michigan 55-52.
EMU (13-11, 3-6) was paced by Katie Krasowski's 10 kills for a .833 attack percentage and five block-assists.
The Zips controlled the tempo out of the gate early in the first set. Akron's tandem of Julie Shallman and Wilson in the middle helped to build a three-point lead at 19-16. The pair combined for 10 of UA's 19 kills in the opening stanza.
Eastern countered with a 6-0 run to turn the tables and put Akron in a hole, 22-19. The Zips hung on and strung together a 5-1 run of their own, capped by back-to-back service aces from Callie Mack, for Akron's first look at set point.
After an EMU timeout, the score tied at 24 and 25 before the Eagles came together for two consecutive blocks to end the extended set.
Akron fell victim to early deficits in the second and third sets that would prove too much to overcome, as both periods followed a similar pattern that led to the same outcome.
The Zips return to the court on Saturday when they travel to Central Michigan for a MAC cross-divisional matchup at McGuirk Arena. First serve is set for 7 p.m. ET. The Chippewas (10-11, 4-5) defeated Buffalo in straight sets Friday night at home.
