BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Former University of Akron men's golfer Bill Williamson has advanced to Thursday's championship match of the 33rd U.S. Mid-Amateur Championship at the Country Club of Birmingham.
Williamson reached Thursday's championship match in dominating fashion, earning the No. 3 seed in a field of 264 golfers during the stroke play event on Oct. 5-6.
From there, Williamson dominated the match play bracket, comprised of the top 64 players from the stroke play portion of the championship. In reaching the championship match, Williamson ended four of his five matches by the 14th hole. He has not trailed throughout the event and has only been All Square with his opponents for five holes.
In today's semifinal match, he defeated Kenneth McCready 2&1, taking a lead on the second hole and never relinquishing it.
Williamson will face Michael McCoy in Thursday's championship match, which is set to begin at 8 a.m. ET. The two will play 36 holes for the title. The winner will most likely earn an invitation to The Masters next April.
The Mid-Amateur, for amateur golfers of at least 25 years of age, provides a formal national championship for the post-college amateur, for whom the game is truly an avocation. The USGA accepted 4,238 entries for the 2013 championship, with 264 players advancing to the stroke play portion of the championship.
Williamson, a four-year letterwinner for the Zips from 1996-99, appeared in 47 events and played 125 total rounds, both top-five in the Akron record books. He was a second-team All-MAC selection in 1998 and a Cleveland Golf/Srixon All-America Scholar in 1999.
