Baseball Falls in Doubleheader on Saturday at Bowling Green

AKRON, Ohio – The University of Akron (8-28, 5-9 MAC) baseball team dropped both games of the doubleheader against Bowling Green State University (13-19, 8-6 MAC) on Saturday afternoon by scores of 14-6 and 5-1 in the first and second games of this three game Mid-American Conference series at Steller Field.
Game one of the doubleheader was started by freshman JT Brubaker, his 10th start of the season. Brubaker's outing lasted 2.2 innings with seven earned runs, two walks and three strikeouts. The native of New Carlisle, Ohio had his record fall to 0-7 with the loss.
UA started out in an early hole after BGSU's Jeremy Shay hit a two-run homer to right field in the bottom of the first inning, giving Bowling Green a 2-0 lead.
The Zips fought back with three runs of their own in the top of the third inning. James Sheltown led off the inning with a single, which was followed up with a walk by Daulton Mosbarger and Matt Rembielak reaching base on an error by the Falcons' third baseman.
With the bases loaded and no one out, Akron registered three straight at-bats resulting in RBI. Devan Ahart, Matt LaRocca and Jared Turocy each tallied the RBI in the inning to give the Zips a 3-2 lead after the top of the third.
In the bottom of the third, Bowling Green took a commanding lead as nine runs crossed the plate in the inning for the Falcons. BGSU held an 11-3 lead following the third.
Akron plated three more runs following the BGSU rally, which were the final runs UA scored in the game. Again, back-to-back-to-back RBI at-bats resulted in the Zips adding three runs.
Rembielak, Ahart and LaRocca each drove in runs in the top of the fourth inning to bring the score to 11-6. Ahart and LaRocca shared the team-lead in RBI for the first game of the doubleheader with two each, while Ahart and Sheltrown had the most hits at two a piece.
The Falcons plated two more runs in the fourth and another in the fifth inning, which finished their first game scoring output and brought the game to its final score, 14-6.
John Valek III made the start at pitcher for the Zips in game two of the doubleheader, and turned in 7.1 innings pitched with five earned runs allowed, three walks and two strikeouts. Valek's record dropped to 2-6 in the loss to Bowling Green.
The Zips and Falcons would keep the game scoreless until the fourth inning, when the Falcons plated three runs to take the first lead of the game, 3-0. BGSU added another run to their lead in the fifth inning, pushing their lead to 4-0.
Turocy notched the lone Akron RBI with a double to right-center field in the seventh inning to plate Ahart for the first Akron run of the game. Turocy and Ahart each had one base hit in the second loss of the day.
Bowling Green added their final run of the second game in the bottom of the eighth inning, which gave the game its final score of 5-1.
Akron and Bowling Green will matchup for the series finale tomorrow at Steller Field, set for a 1 p.m., first pitch. Links to live stats and an audio broadcast are available through the Akron baseball schedule page.
