Baseball Travels to Pittsburgh for Wednesday Matchup

AKRON, Ohio – The University of Akron baseball team will travel to the No. 17 University of Pittsburgh for a midweek matchup on Wednesday at 6 p.m., on Charles L. Cost Field.

Matchup Overview
Akron will head into the matchup with an overall record of 9-31 after two losses to Buffalo in last weekend's series. Akron fell by scores of 7-6, and 7-2.
The Pittsburgh Panthers hold an overall record of 32-10 prior to their game against West Virginia on Tuesday evening. In their last series, the Panthers swept Cincinnati in three games by scores of 7-3, 4-3, and 10-9.
Pittsburgh holds a .303 team batting average with 304 runs scored on 443 hits in 42 games. The Panthers' leading hitter, Casey Roche, has a .358 batting average and 53 RBI.
The two teams last faced off when the Panthers traveled to Canal Park on April 2, when Akron fell 11-7. Akron holds an all-time series record of 23-26 against Pittsburgh.
The Starter
Freshman Michael Steensen is scheduled to make his fourth start of the season in the Zips rotation. Steensen was originally scheduled to pitch on Sunday versus Buffalo, but the game was called due to rain.
His last start happened on April 21 against Bowling Green, which ended up in the Zips favor with a 7-3 victory. Steensen pitched 4.3 innings with two earned runs allowed. Overall this season, Steensen has pitched 20.2 innings with six strikeouts.
Quick Hits
Sophomore Matt Rembielak had a successful week at the plate over this past week. In three games played, Rembielak collected five base hits, one double, one run scored, two walks and a stolen base. The native of Tallmadge, Ohio also did not commit an error at shortstop in games against Buffalo and Canisius.
Senior Jared Turocy continued to provide consistency for the Akron lineup, as he collected four base hits in games against Canisius and Buffalo. Along with the four base hits, Turocy added one RBI, one run scored and one stolen base. One of Turocy's four hits this past week was a homerun, his second of the season.
Cale Giddings provided the Zips offense with three RBI in the 7-6 loss to Buffalo on Friday, a single-game high for Giddings. Thus far this season, Giddings owns a .250 batting average in 17 games played with eight RBI and five runs scored.
Zach Beaver had a strong week coming out of the Akron bullpen. The freshman reliever provided the Zips with 6.0 scoreless innings pitched with two strikeouts and two hits allowed. This season, Beaver owns a 2.89 ERA over 28.0 innings on the mound with 13 strikeouts.
