INDIANAPOLIS – For the second-consecutive season, junior Charlie Bull will represent The University of Akron men's golf team and the Mid-American Conference at the NCAA Central Regional Championship, the NCAA announced on Monday.
Bull was one of ten individuals selected to compete in the Central region on May 16-18 at The Ohio State University Golf Club, Scarlet Course, in Columbus, Ohio. He is one of two individuals from the MAC playing at the regional, including Toledo's Chris Selfridge. MAC champion Kent State will play in the South-Central regional in Fayetteville, Ark., while Ball State was selected as an at-large team in the Pullman, Wash., regional.
"Charlie had a fantastic year," men's golf head coach David Trainor said. "His consistency this season has been incredible and he truly is an everyday player...this year has proved that. Words cannot express how proud I am of Charlie and this honor is extremely well deserved."
The announcement comes one day after Bull posted the third-highest finish in a MAC Championship by an Akron player. He used a round of 2-over 74 to close out the event in third place with a four-round score of 2-over 290. His third-place finish trails only Greg Boyette (1998) and Brad Wright (2007) who posted second-place finishes.
Following the championship event, Bull was named First-Team All-MAC and was named to the MAC All-Tournament team for the second-consecutive season. He is the first two-time First-Team selection since Blake Sattler (2005, 2007) and the first to earn consecutive First-Team honors since Boyette was named to three-straight First-Teams (1996-98).
Bull finished the regular season, through the MAC Championship, with a 73.07 scoring average, including nine top-25 finishes in 11 events. Last October, he won his first collegiate at the Kenny Perry Invitational (Oct. 14-16) and has eight top-15 finishes. He has posted 13 rounds at par or better this season, tied for fifth-most in a single season in program history.
Last season, Bull became the first Akron men's golfer to compete in the NCAA Regional Championship since Akron joined the Division I rankings (1980-81). He finished tied for 19th place with a three-round tally of even-par 213 at the Ann Arbor regional last year, including a career-low tying round of 66 on the final day.
The low five teams and the low individual not on those teams from each regional will advance to the NCAA Championships, which are slated for May 28-June 2, at The Capital City Club, Crabapple Course in Atlanta, Georgia. Georgia Tech is the host institution for this year's championships.
