AKRON, Ohio – Ten events, including the Golfweek Program Challenge and the Firestone Invitational at the world-famous Firestone Country Club are just some of the highlights of the 2013-14 University of Akron men's golf schedule, head coach David Trainor announced on Wednesday.
The Zips will play four fall events, including the Firestone Invitational, and seven spring events, culminating with the 2014 Mid-American Conference Championship in Carmel, Ind.
"Our schedule will give our team a chance to play against some great competition on equally great courses, which is always my goal when putting together our schedule," Trainor said.
Akron opens the season in Pawleys Island, S.C., for the 2013 Golfweek Program Challenge on Sept. 8-10. The event is one of the most unique in all of college golf, as team titles will be awarded to the top men's and top women's teams, as well as a combined crown. The men will be joined by the Akron women's golf team at the event.
The Zips then head to California for the St. Mary's Invitational (Sept. 23-24) before returning to Akron to play host to the Firestone Invitational (Oct. 7-8). The fall slate wraps up with the Pinetree Intercollegiate in Kennesaw, Ga. (Oct. 21-22).
"I am very excited for our fall schedule this year," Trainor said. "We are looking forward to playing some great competition in the fall. We host the annual Firestone Invitational at the world renowned Firestone Country Club. With a strong course and field, it is always fun to host this event."
The squad opens its 2014 schedule on Feb. 17 at the Mobile Bay Intercollegiate (Feb. 17-18) before playing three-straight events in the state of South Carolina. The Zips will play in the Cleveland Golf Palmetto Intercollegiate (March 10-11), the Hootie at Bulls Bay Intercollegiate (March 23-25) and the Furman Intercollegiate (March 28-30).
Akron will hit the course twice in April, traveling to North Carolina for the Irish Creek Intercollegiate (April 5-6) followed by the regular-season finale at the NYX Hoosier Invitational (April 12-13).
The Zips will then head to Prairie View Golf Course for the 2014 MAC Championships. There, Akron will look to earn as spot in the NCAA Regionals (May 15-17).
The Zips return five letterwinners from last season, led by two-time PING All-Region selection Charlie Bull. The Zips will also have the services of junior Harry Whittle and sophomores Louis Birchall, Ryan Harris and Carr Vernon.
UA will also welcome three freshmen in the fall, including Chandler Morgan (Lexington, Ky.), Zach Gollwitzer (Ballwin, Mo.) and JB Williams (Danville, Ky.).
