Carr Vernon Wins First Match, Advances at 113th U.S. Amateur

BROOKLINE, Mass. – It took 19 holes, but University of Akron sophomore golfer Carr Vernon defeated Matt Emery on Wednesday to advance to the Round of 32 at the 113th U.S. Amateur.
Vernon will face the winner of the Oliver Goss/Toni Hakula match on Thursday morning beginning at 9:30 a.m. ET.
It was an up-and-down round for Vernon, leading most of the match before falling behind late and rallying for the win. He took control on the first hole, posting a birdie to take a 1UP lead.
A par on the third hole gave Vernon a 2UP lead, before falling to 1UP on the fourth. He would birdie No. 7 for a 2UP lead before making the turn with a 1UP advantage.
Vernon would lead 2UP through the 13th hole before dropping the next three holes to fall behind Emery by one hole. A par on the 18th would move the match to All Square, pushing the match to a 19th hole.
Back at the first hole, Vernon would post a par, his eighth of the day, to take the match and advance to Thursday's Round of 32. With a win in the Round of 32, Vernon would advance to the Round of 16, which is set to begin Thursday afternoon.
This year's U.S. Amateur consists of 312 players. The winner of the U.S. Amateur receives: A gold medal and custody of the Havemeyer Trophy for the ensuing year, an exemption from local and sectional qualifying for the next U.S. Open, an exemption from qualifying for the next 10 U.S. Amateurs, an exemption from qualifying for the next British Open Championship and a likely invitation to the next Masters Tournament.
