Women's Tennis Opens Fall Schedule at Cornell Invitational

AKRON, Ohio – The University of Akron women's tennis team begins the fall component of its schedule this weekend when it travels to Ithaca, N.Y., to compete in the Cornell Invitational. Play runs Friday-Sunday at Reis Tennis Center, beginning at 3 p.m. ET on Friday and 9 a.m. on both Saturday and Sunday.
Six schools will participate in the event. Along with student-athletes from host Cornell and Akron, competitors from Albany, Binghamton, Cleveland State and Lehigh will face off in three flights of singles and two doubles brackets. Click the links at the top of this article to view each draw.
Representing the Zips in flight A singles will be junior Olga Shkundina and sophomore Martina Zerbola. Competing in flight B will be senior Ksenia Berestetska along with freshmen Shannon Newnes and Karolina Maksimava. In flight C will be sophomore Madison Cohen, and freshmen Caroline Harpaintner and Marta Briega.
The Akron doubles lineup will consist of Shkundina and Newnes, Zerbola and Maksimava, and Cohen and Hairpaintner in flight A. Briega and Berestetska will team up in flight B.
The Zips closed the 2012-13 season with an 18-10 record (5-3 Mid-American Conference) and advanced to the MAC tournament's semifinal round for the fourth-straight season and fourth time in program history. The squad ended the year ranked eighth in the ITA's Midwest region.
After winning the MAC Tournament championship and representing the league in the NCAA Tournament in 2011 and 2012, in 2013 the UA doubles team of seniors Angelina Jogasuria and Prang Pantusart was selected to compete in the NCAA Doubles Championship.
