PHILADELPHIA – Madison Cohen advanced herself to the round of 16 in flight B singles to lead the Akron women's tennis team on Friday in day one of the 17th-annual Cissie Leary Invitational, hosted by Penn.
Cohen, who won the flight C singles bracket of the Cornell Invitational last weekend, received a bye out of today's opening round and then disposed of Richmond's Kelsey Williams 6-2, 6-2 in the round of 32. She will face off against Columbia's Ioana Alecsiu on Saturday.
"Madison continued her excellent start to the fall season, playing her best tennis since arriving to campus last year," Akron head coach Brandon Padgett said. "We are very excited to see her continue to develop."
Caroline Harpaintner lost 6-3, 2-6, 10-4 to Columbia's Nada Zaher in the opening round of flight B singles, but came back with a 6-0, 6-0 defeat of Drexel's Mel Reyes in the first round of the consolation bracket.
In flight A singles, Ksenia Berestetska lost to Princeton's Sivan Krems 6-2, 6-0 after earning a bye in the first round, while Karolina Maksimava fell 6-1, 6-4 to Cornell's Alex D'Ascenzo in the opening round of 64. Maksimava rebounded with a 6-4, 6-4 win over Bowdoin's Samantha Stalder in consolation play.
In the doubles round of 32, Berestetska and Maksimava lost 8-0 to Columbia's Bianca Sanon and Kanika Valdya, and Cohen and Harpaintner dropped an 8-1 decision to Princeton's Joan Cannon and Caroline Joyce.
"Today was a serious struggle as we started off with five-straight losses," Padgett said. "Finishing with three-straight wins was certainly positive, but we have to do a better job of adjusting quicker."
Competition resumes on Saturday at 8 a.m. ET. The event runs through Sunday.
