PHILADELPHIA – Madison Cohen paced the Akron women's tennis team by advancing to the quarterfinals of flight B singles on Saturday in day two of the 17th-annual Cissie Leary Invitational. The three-day event, which concludes on Sunday, is being hosted by Penn.
Cohen defeated Columbia's Ioana Alecsiu 6-4, 6-4 in the round of 16, before retiring due to injury while competing against Maryland's Olga Bredikhina in the quarterfinals. Cohen lost the first set 6-3 and was down 4-2 in the second when she withdrew.
In flight A singles consolation play, Ksenia Berestetska downed Maryland's Alexandra Stanova 6-1, 6-1 in the round of 16 and Temple's Alicia Doms 6-1, 6-1 in the quarterfinal. She will face Delaware's Carmen Lai in Sunday's semifinal.
Also in the flight A singles consolation, Karolina Maksimava won her quarterfinal contest with Drexel's Marcela Rosales 6-2, 4-6, 10-2, but then withdrew from the competition due to illness.
In the flight B singles consolation, Caroline Harpaintner advanced to the quarterfinal, where she lost 6-1, 6-4 to Bowdoin's Pilar Giffenig after a 6-2, 6-2 victory over St. John's Diamond Adams in the round of 16.
"This was a difficult day with injuries and illness, but we played much better as a group," Akron head coach Brandon Padgett said. "It was tough not being able to play doubles today, but it was good to get the results we had in singles."
Sunday's competition starts at 8 a.m. ET.
