Women's Tennis Heads to Midwest Regional

AKRON— Two Zips women's tennis players will travel to Urbana, Ill., this week for the 2014 USTA/ITA Midwest Regional on Oct. 16-21 at the Atkins Tennis Center.
In the opening singles qualifier draw on Oct. 16, junior Martina Zerbola (Neuquen, Argentina) is seeded fifth and faces No. 6 seed Lauren Burich from Wisconsin at 9 a.m. The winner faces Illinois-Chicago's Jackie Altsanrai at 12:15 p.m.
Seeded 16th, sophomore Karolina Maksimava (Mogilev, Belarus) has a first-round bye and will face the winner of the match between No. 13 Keti Mebuke of Illinois-Chicago and No. 14 Julia Jamieson of Illinois at 1:15 p.m.
"Tough draw, but we know that there are no easy matches at the Regional Tournament," head coach Brandon Padgett said. "We are looking forward to the challenge."
Players vie for a spot in the prestigious USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships, which will take place Nov. 6-9 at the USTA-Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing, N.Y.
The regional tournament will begin with a 48-player qualifying singles draw on Thursday, Oct. 16, with players advancing to the 48-person main draw, which kicks off on Saturday, Oct. 18. Doubles play begins on Friday, Oct. 17 and will feature 48 of the region's top tandems. Both singles and doubles finals will take place Tuesday, October 21.
