AKRON— Zips women's tennis opened play on the first day of action at its own Akron Invitational on Friday.
In its opening doubles match against Michigan State, junior Martina Zerbola (Neuquen, Argentina) and sophomore Karolina Maksimava (Mogilev, Belarus) defeated Erin Faulkner and Aslina Chua, 8-5, at the No. 1 spot.
"I am extremely proud of the effort shown today," head coach Brandon Padgett said. "We knew that this tournament was going to challenge us from start to finish, and we were in position today to win several singles matches, and we will learn to close those points and matches out."
In singles action, Cornell won five of six matches against Akron. The Zips' lone win came at No. 6 as freshmen Sophia Geier (Burgebrach, Germany) defeated Allegra Hanlon, 6-2, 6-4.
"We are so young, which makes it that much more exciting to see the progression that these young ladies are making," Padgett added.
In the other first singles round, Michigan State took four of six matches from West Virginia.
In doubles action, Cornell won two of three matches over West Virginia.
All play is round-robin. Team scores are not kept.
Play resumes at 9 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 4, with Cornell facing West Virginia in singles. Doubles begin at Noon with Akron against West Virginia, and Cornell playing Michigan State. At 1 p.m., Akron hosts Michigan State in singles action.
