AKRON— Akron women's tennis faced tough competition on the second day of action at its own Akron Invitational on Saturday.
The Zips were swept in doubles action by West Virginia.
In singles action, Michigan State swept Akron.
"Today was a difficult day. We started off extremely sluggish in doubles, and that is disappointing," head coach Brandon Padgett said. "Singles was a bit better, especially from our returning players. Playing with one junior, two sophomores, and four freshmen can be difficult, but the experience gained with each matched played is extremely valuable, especially against competition from the Big Ten, Ivy League, and Big 12."
In the other first singles round, Cornell won five of six matches against West Virginia.
In doubles action, Cornell swept Michigan State.
All play is round-robin. Team scores are not kept.
Play concludes at 9 a.m. on Sunday, Oct. 5, with Cornell facing Michigan State in singles. Doubles begin at Noon with Akron against Cornell, and Michigan State playing West Virginia. At 1 p.m., Akron hosts West Virginia in singles action.
