HIGHLIGHTS
AKRON— Akron women's tennis concluded plays at its own Akron Invitational on Sunday.
The Zips were swept in doubles action by Cornell.
In singles action against West Virginia, sophomore Karolina Maksimava (Mogilev, Belarus) defeated Kaja Margole, 4-6, 6-2, 10-7, at the No. 1 spot. At No. 5, freshman Sophia Geier (Burgebrach, Germany) beat Yvon Martinez, 4-6, 6-1, 10-7.
"I was very disappointed in our doubles today, and for the weekend, for the most part," head coach Brandon Padgett said. "We did respond well today in singles, with all five matches being decided by third set tiebreaks. The team fought hard all weekend long, and a great deal of learning occurred, which is exactly what we were hoping for."
In the other first singles round, Cornell took five of six matches from Michigan State.
In doubles action, Michigan State won two of three matches against West Virginia.
All play was round-robin. Team scores were not kept.
Akron travels to the Midwest Regional on Oct. 16-21 in Urbana, Ill.
