Martha Thorn Invite: Day 2 Results

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — Zips women's tennis won two singles and one doubles match during the final day of competition at West Virginia's Martha Thorn Invitational on Saturday at the Ridgeview Racquet Club.
Against James Madison, freshman Ariadna Blinova (Riga, Latvia) defeated Dylan Owens, 6-2, 6-1. In doubles action, sophomore Shannon Newnes (Romford, London) and freshman Maria Bessmertnaya (Pyatigosk, Russia) defeated Rachel Nelson and Kimmy Herrock, 8-5.
In the final match against Liberty, Blinova posted the only win on the day with a 3-6, 6-3, 10-8 comeback win over Emily Groeneveld.
"This was a good tournament for this extremely young group of players, and Ariadna really stepped up and showed us what she is capable of," head coach Brandon Padgett said. "We were in good positions to pick up wins in many of the matches this weekend; we just have to do a better job of taking advantage of those opportunities."
The invite closed out Akron's fall schedule. The Zips will resume action on Jan. 17 against Tulane.
