Complete 2014-15 Schedule
AKRON, Ohio – Eleven events, including the Golfweek Program Challenge and the Firestone Invitational at the world-famous Firestone Country Club are just some of the highlights of the 2014-15 University of Akron men's golf schedule, head coach David Trainer announced on Friday.
The Zips will play five fall events, beginning with the defense of their Golfweek Program Challenge team title, and six spring events, culminating with the 2015 Mid-American Conference Championship in Chardon, Ohio.
"I am very excited about our schedule for this year," Trainor said. "I have changed things up a bit, added some new events and changed around how we will compete in the hopes we will be better prepared come the spring. I love my guys and look forward to leading them into what I hope will be the best year of Zips Golf yet. "
Akron opens the season in Pawleys Island, S.C., for the 2014 Golfweek Program Challenge Sept. 7-9. The event is one of the most unique in all of college golf, as team titles will be awarded to the top men's and top women's teams, as well as a combined crown. The men will be joined by the Akron women's golf team at the event. UA won last year's event by five shots.
"We will start our fall at the Golfweek Program Challenge, where we are looking forward to defending our title from a year ago," Trainor added.
UA will then close out September at the Wolf Run Intercollegiate (Sept. 20-21) in Zionsville, Ind., before returning home to play host to the Firestone Invitational (Oct. 6-7). The Zips will conclude the fall slate at the Fall Preview at Sagamore (Oct. 13-14) and at the Pinetree Intercollegiate (Oct. 20-21).
The spring schedule will being March 8 when UA travels to Alabama for the Tiger Invitational (March 8-10), the first of three events in March. The Zips will also make their first appearance in the Talis Park Challenge (March 15-16), as well as a return trip to the Furman Intercollegiate (March 27-29).
Akron will then take the course twice in April, playing in the Gary Koch Invitational (April 6-7) and concluding the regular season April 11-12 at the Irish Creek Intercollegiate.
"Our spring schedule will kick off at the Tiger Invitational hosted by Jason Dufner," Trainor said. "This start is later than we have done in the past will prepare our guys as best as possible for what will be a fast spring slate."
Akron will play host to the conference championship event (May 1-3) for the first time since May 2005. There, Akron will look to earn as spot in the NCAA Regionals (May 14-16).
The Zips return five letterwinners from last year's squad, including First-Team All-MAC selection Ryan Harris. Harris, entering his junior season, finished second on the Zips in scoring average (73.48), posting six top-25 finishes in nine events, including a fourth-place showing at the MAC Championship, where he was also named to the MAC All-Tournament Team.
Akron will also return senior Harry Whittle, junior Louis Birchall and sophomores Zach Gollwitzer, Chandler Morgan and J.B. Williams.
The Zips will welcome three newcomers to the squad, including sophomore-transfer Yann Pfeiffer (Saint-Nom-la-Bretèche, France) from Alabama State and freshmen George Baylis (Ascot, England) and Elliott Grayson (Shelby, N.C.).
