AKRON— Zips women's tennis split matches on the second day of its own Akron Shootout on Saturday, Sept. 20.
"Today wasn't exactly what we were hoping for, but we definitely saw some things that we liked, a lot," UA head coach Brandon Padgett said. "We also saw things that we need to work on, and we will get to work right away. Tomorrow is an important day, so we can see how we finish a long, tough weekend of matches, physically."
In singles action against Maryland-Baltimore County (UMBC), Akron won three of six matches. At No. 1, junior Martina Zerbola (Neuquen, Argentina) defeated Mariami Dalashvili, 6-3, 6-0. At No. 2, sophomore Karolina Maksimava (Mogilev, Belarus) beat Madlena Kurasz, 6-1, 6-2. At the No. 3 spot, freshman Ariadna Blinova (Riga, Latvia) defeated Alice Taylor, 6-4, 6-3.
In doubles action against Texas State, Akron won two of the three matches. At the No. 1 spot, Zerbola and Maksimava defeated Ana Laura Gutierrez and Eva Dench, 8-1. Blinova and freshman Kati Mdzinarishvili (Hudson, Ohio) claimed an 8-5 win over Maddie Moore and Pippa Carr at No. 3. The Zips dropped all three doubles matches to Duquesne.
Texas State swept all six singles matches against Duquesne and all three doubles matches against UMBC.
All play is round-robin. Team scores are not kept.
Play concludes on Sunday with singles play only. Because of forecasted rain, all matches will take place at the LaTuchie Tennis Center (3200 Darrow Road, Stow, Ohio 44224).
