Geier & Newnes Sweep in Doubles at Notre Dame Invitational
September 27 | Women's Tennis
SOUTH BEND, Ind.— Two Zips women's tennis players swept in doubles action during the second day of competition at the Notre Dame Invitational on Saturday.
Freshman Sophia Geier (Burgebrach, Germany) and sophomore Shannon Newnes (Romford, London) defeated Illinois' Emily Barretta and Tulane's Zoe Gaber, 8-1.
In their second doubles match, Geier and Newnes beat Tulane's Meredith Maltby and Vanessa Nommensen, 8-2.
In singles action, Newnes lost to Illinois' Madie Baillon, 7-6 (5), 6-2, while Geier lost to Tulane's Emily Dvorak, 6-2, 6-1.
"Today was a Jekyll and Hyde day for us on the court," UA head coach Brandon Padgett said. "We played much better in doubles today, which I am very happy about, but our singles play was not strong at all. Missed opportunities and mental struggles hurt us today, but growth happened, and that is what is most important."
The Notre Dame Invitational concludes on Sunday, Sept. 28 at 9 a.m. with singles action only.
