AKRON, Ohio – After coming off a second-place finish at its own Firestone Invitational, the University of Akron men's golf team used 12 days to prepare for the Mountaineer Intercollegiate hosted by West Virginia University. The Zips will be back in action on Monday and Tuesday, Oct.19-20 in Bridgeport, W.Va. at the Pete Dye Golf Club.
The Pete Dye Golf Club is ranked No. 45 on Golf Digest's America's 100 Greatest Courses and No. 9 on Golfweek's Best Modern Courses. The par 72 course stretches 7,353 yards across 250 acres rolling through the Appalachian Mountains with a slope of 144 and a handicap rating of 75.7.
WVU is competing in its first varsity season since 1982 and welcomes 13 programs to the inaugural Mountaineer Intercollegiate. The 14-team field features five programs ranked in GolfStat's Top 100 (Oct. 14), including No. 11 Penn State, No. 65 Missouri, No. 84 UConn, No. 96 Miami (OH) and No. 98 Bowling Green. Also competing at the event are No. 104 Akron, No. 105 Mississippi State, No. 113 Cincinnati, No. 115 Toledo, No. 117 Towson, No. 155 Marshall, No. 176 WVU, No. 204 Seton Hall, and No. 259 St. John's.
The Zips' five-man roster includes sophomore George Baylis (Ascot, England), redshirt freshman Elliott Grayson (Shelby, N.C.), junior J.B. Williams (Danville, Ky.), senior Louis Birchall (Ingestre Park, England), and senior Ryan Harris (Carlisle, Mass.). In addition, junior Yann Pfeiffer (Saint-Nom-la-Breteche, France) will compete as an individual.
In the first three tournaments, Baylis led the Zips' scoring efforts. He recorded scores of par or better in 5-out-of-9 rounds with a 73.44 scoring average. At the Firestone Invitational, he fired back-to-back 2-under par 70's and a 1-under par 71 to finish 5-under 211 and fifth overall. Meanwhile, Grayson and Williams have traded places, finishing second or third this season while both averaging 75.33 strokes per round.
In two tournament appearances, Birchall maintains a 75.33 stroke average while Harris owns a 75.5 average. Additionally, Pfeiffer currently sports a 77.22 average over three events.
The 36-hole event is scheduled to begin with a shotgun start on Monday at 11:30 a.m. ET, and Tuesday's final round is scheduled for a 9 a.m. ET shotgun start.
