BRIDGEPORT, W.Va. – The University of Akron men's golf team ended the first round of the Mountaineer Intercollegiate ranked 10th overall on Monday. The Zips fired a 304 (+16) total team score, sitting five shots away from a Top 5 finish.
No. 11 Penn State leads the 14-team field with a first round 294 (+6) total while No. 84 UConn trails by one stroke. Individually, Marshall's Clark Robinson shot a field-low 69 (-3) to hold a one stroke lead over a three-way tie for the runner-up position.
Junior J.B. Williams (Danville, Ky.) is currently leading the Zips' scoring efforts. Williams finished the first round raked eighth overall with a 1-over par 73. Additionally, six individuals are tied for the eighth slot. Sophomore George Baylis (Ascot, England), redshirt freshman Elliott Grayson (Shelby, N.C.), and senior Ryan Harris (Carlisle, Mass.) all carded 77 (+5) scores, landing in a tie for 35th place. Senior Louis Birchall (Ingestre Park, England) rounded out the team scoring with a 79 (+7) finish while junior Yann Pfeiffer (Saint-Nom-la-Breteche, France), playing as an individual, shot 78 (+8).
"Today, we made a couple of big numbers that hurt us and did not make near enough birdies," head coach David Trainor said. "This is a great golf course and great event, and we are in a great position for tomorrow."
Tuesday's final round is scheduled for a 9 a.m. ET shotgun start.

The 54-hole tournament was reduced to 36-holes on Sunday due to early morning weather forecasts for Monday.
