Men's Golf Climbs Four Spots, Zips Finish Sixth at Mountaineer Intercollegiate

AKRON, Ohio – Senior Ryan Harris (Carlisle, Mass.) fired a 1-under par 71 to lead the University of Akron men's golf team to a sixth place finish at the Mountaineer Intercollegiate hosted by West Virginia University. During the final round of competition, the Zips climbed four spots on the leaderboard to finish with a 9-over 297 team effort. Akron completed the two-day event with a 601 (+25).
Harris used seven birdies and six pars to move from 35th overall (77, +5) to 10th with a 148 (+4) tournament total. Meanwhile teammate, junior J.B. Williams (Danville, Ky.) also finished 10th. Williams carded a 75 (+3), highlighted by eight pars, three birdies and an eagle. Also cracking the Top 25 was redshirt freshman Elliott Grayson (Shelby, N.C.). Grayson fired a 2-over 74, bringing his two-day total to 151 (+7), which was good for 23rd place.
Sophomore George Baylis (Ascot, England) added a pair of 77 (+5) rounds to finish 154 (+10) while senior Louis Birchall (Ingestre Park, England) rounded out the team scoring with a 161 (+17) effort. Junior Yann Pfeiffer (Saint-Nom-la-Breteche, France), playing as an individual, recovered from a 78 (+6) first round with a 76 (+4) to finish tied for 43rd at 154 (+10).
"I'm very proud of our effort this week," head coach David Trainor said. "The Pete Dye Golf course was very hard. It was a grind and our guys handled it well. We still have work to do, but I am very pleased with our progress."
No. 11 Penn State held on to win the 14-team field event with scores of 294, 291 – 585 (+9) while No. 84 UConn finished runner-up, 295, 300 -595 (+19). Individually, Cincinnati's Davis Baxterearned medalist honors with a 5-under par 139 total.
Akron will be back in action on Sunday, Oct. 25-27 in the Outer Banks, N.C. for the ODU/OBX Intercollegiate at Kilmarlic Golf Club.
