Women's Tennis Heads to ITA Midwest Regionals

AKRON, Ohio — Four Zips women's tennis players will travel to Ann Arbor, Mich., this week for the 2015 ITA Midwest Regional Championships hosted by the University of Michigan at the Varsity Tennis Center.
The six-day event runs from Oct. 22-27 while the winners of each draw (singles and doubles) will clinch a spot to play in the ITA National Indoor Championships, which will take place Nov. 12-15 at the USTA-Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing, N.Y.
The 25 Midwest region teams participating include host Michigan, Akron, Bowling Green, Butler, Chicago State, Cleveland State, DePaul, Detroit, Eastern Illinois, Eastern Michigan, Illinois State, Illinois-Chicago, Illinois, Marquette, Michigan State, Northern Illinois, Northwestern, Notre Dame, Ohio State, Toledo, Western Michigan, Wisconsin, Wisconsin-Green Bay, Wisconsin-Milwaukee, and Youngstown State.
In the opening singles qualifier draw on Oct. 22, sophomore Sophia Geier (Burgebrach, Germany) is slotted eighth and faces Julianne Heino from Youngstown State at 8 a.m. In the 13th position, sophomore Ariadna Blinova (Riga, Latvia) is set to take on Irina Slizovskaya of Detroit at 8 a.m. as well.
Senior Martina Zerbola (Neuquen, Argentina) sits as the 19th spot and will battle against Western Michigan's Denise Azcui at 9 a.m. while Karolina Maksimova (Mogilev, Belarus) is set for a 10 a.m. clash against Mathilde Orange from Cleveland State.
"We will be playing against some of the best teams in the country, with high quality players from top to bottom," said head coach Brandon Padgett. "This is an excellent opportunity to gauge exactly where we are as individual players, and to see how we stack up against elite level competition. I am looking forward to seeing how we perform."
The regional tournament will begin with a 64-player qualifying singles draw on Thursday, Oct. 22, with eight players advancing to the 64-person main draw, which kicks off on Saturday, Oct. 24. Doubles play begins on Friday, Oct. 23 and will feature 64 of the region's top tandems. Doubles finals will take place on Monday, Oct. 26 while singles will be held on Tuesday, October 27.
Admission is free, with the tournament being held indoors. Consolation action will be played outdoors, weather permitting.
