AKRON, Ohio— The University of Akron women's tennis team faced tough competition on the second day of action at its own Akron Invitational on Saturday.

The Zips took two out of three matches in doubles action against UMKC. In singles action, Cornell won five of six matches against Akron. The Zips' lone win came at No. 3 as junior Karolina Maksimova overcame Dena Tanenbaum, 7-6 (5), 1-6, 1-0 (8).

"Today I saw a lot of what I needed to see," said head coach Brandon Padgett. "This group fought hard, made adjustments, and worked hard from beginning to end. Results are important, but I knew that today was going to be difficult, and I am extremely pleased with the resolve I saw today."

Ariadna Blinova and Maksimova claimed a 6-3 victory over UMKC's Allie Schulte and Marina Albert in No. 2 doubles play while Luisa Echeverry and Martina Zerbola defeated Linda Mouhoub and Mariam Kurasbediani in No. 3 doubles, 6-2.

"Doubles was much better today, and singles was as well," said Padgett. "I am looking forward to seeing how we play tomorrow, with another tough day of match play ahead of us. This is exactly what we need at this time of the season, to push us to improve on a day to day basis."

In the other first singles round, West Virginia swept UMKC.

In doubles action, Cornell won two of three matches against WVU.

All play is round-robin. Team scores are not kept.

Play concludes at 9 a.m. on Sunday, Oct. 4, with Cornell facing UMKC in singles. Doubles begin at Noon with West Virginia against UMKC, and Akron playing Cornell. At 1 p.m., Akron hosts West Virginia in singles action.
