CLEVELAND — Akron senior women's tennis player Olga Shkundina (Ufa, Russia) was named the 2015 recipient of the Leann Grimes Davidge Sportsmanship Award, the Mid-American Conference announced on Thursday.
Additionally, Shkundina was named to the All-MAC second team.
The Zips' lone senior, Shkundina played the season at No. 2 and No. 3 singles with a 5-2 Conference record and 12-5 mark overall. Shkundina also played No. 2 and No. 3 doubles with a 2-2 MAC mark and 5-4 record overall.
The sportsmanship award is presented to the student-athlete who has displayed outstanding sportsmanship in MAC competition.
"I am extremely pleased to see that Olga was honored by the Mid-American Conference and its coaches today; she deserves it," Zips head coach Brandon Padgett said. "Olga played this season with an enormous amount of pain, both in her foot and her shoulder, and she was still able to perform at a high level, which is a credit to not only her talent, but also her heart. She will be greatly missed, both on and off the court, by this team and our coaching staff. Olga will forever be a cherished member of the Akron Tennis family, and I could not be more proud of her, and honored that I was given the opportunity to coach her in college."
Shkundina earned the 2013-14 and the 2-14-15 Coaches' Award and was named the 2012 Mid-American Conference Freshman of the Year. She began college at age 15, graduated in four years with a degree in sports management, and competed at the highest level while fighting serious injuries.
Akron (11-11 overall, 3-5 MAC) concluded the 2014-15 season last weekend with a 6-1 win over Northern Illinois.
