AKRON, Ohio – In the bottom of the ninth, sophomore catcher Brian Lees (Brunswick, Ohio) smacked an RBI single to right field, giving the University of Akron baseball team a 4-3 walk-off win over Buffalo in Mid-American Conference action on Sunday afternoon at Lee R. Jackson Field.
The Zips, which took two of three games in the series against UB, improved to 24-25 overall and 12-12 in MAC play, while the Bulls fell to 15-31 overall and 7-17 in the league.
Buffalo struck first, scoring a solo run in the top of the third.
Akron responded with two runs in the bottom of the fifth to take the lead. Lead-off batter Joey Havrilak (Washington, Pa.) tied the game, scoring on a wild pitch after reaching on a double to center. First baseman Gerrad Rohan (North Lima, Ohio) had a sacrifice fly, scoring centerfielder Mason Mamarella (Dover, Ohio) for the go-ahead run.
In the bottom of the seventh, Havrilak scored an insurance run for the Zips as Rohan doubled for the RBI.
Buffalo added single runs in the eighth and ninth to tie the game.
With two outs in the bottom of the ninth, Lees had the game-winning hit to right field, scoring second baseman Alex Dirienzo (Somerset, Pa.) who reached on a walk.
Senior right-hander Matt LaRocca (Stony Brook, N.Y.) captured his first win on the mound of the season (1-1). He threw 1.1 innings, striking out one. Starting pitcher Jon Pusateri (Randolph, Ohio) threw 7.0 innings, fanning eight and walking two while giving up one unearned run.
Overall, Buffalo out-hit Akron, 9-8. The Zips committed one error.
Akron hosts Canisius in a make-up game on Tuesday, May 12, at 3 p.m. at Lee R. Jackson Field.
