CLEVELAND — Three University of Akron women's tennis players— junior Madison Cohen (Huntingdon Valley, Pa.), senior Olga Shkundina (Ufa, Russia), and junior Martina Zerbola (Neuquen, Argentina)— were named to the Academic All-Mid-American Conference women's tennis team on Thursday.
To be eligible for Academic All-MAC honors, student-athletes must have at least a 3.20 grade-point average, must have participated in at least half of the team's contests, and must not be a freshman or transfer.
"This is an outstanding achievement for Madison, Martina, and Olga," Zips head coach Brandon Padgett said. "We have an exceptionally intelligent group of young women as a whole, which will be evident when the ITA Scholar Athlete Awards are announced later this summer. I could not be more proud of how well our players are capable of balancing their academics with the rigors of being a student-athlete."
Cohen, who sports a 3.592 GPA in biology, was one of three upperclassmen on an extremely young team. She opened the spring season at No. 1 singles and played throughout the line-up. Cohen went 3-10 overall in singles and 2-9 in doubles play during the 2014-15 season.
Shkundina, who has a 3.455 GPA in sport management, was the recipient of the MAC's 2015 Leann Grimes Davidge Sportsmanship Award and a second-team All-MAC selection. The Zips' lone senior played the season at No. 2 and No. 3 singles with a 5-2 Conference record and 12-5 mark overall.
Zerbola, who sports a 3.956 GPA in accounting, served as team captain of the Zips' extremely young team. She played primarily at No. 2 singles, going 4-9 overall. Zerbola was a part of the Zips' No. 1 doubles tandem all year, going 12-12 overall and 2-5 in MAC play.
Akron concluded the 2014-15 season at 11-11 overall and 3-5 MAC.
