Baseball Falls to Bowling Green in Series Finale, 9-2

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – The University of Akron baseball team could not fight off a five-run fifth inning from Bowling Green on Sunday afternoon as the Zips fell to the Falcons, 9-2, in the three-game series finale at Steller Field.
With the loss, UA dropped the series and slipped to 22-24 on the season and 10-11 in conference play. Bowling Green now stands at 19-24 overall and 11-10 in the MAC.
Redshirt senior outfielder Joey Havrilak and redshirt junior infielder Gerrad Rohan each collected one RBI on the day. Havrilak led the Zips' offense, recording three of Akron's nine total hits.
The Zips jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first when Rohan singled home sophomore catcher Brian Lees, who reached on a two-out double.
BGSU answered back with one run in the bottom of the first on an RBI single to tie the game.
Akron plated a single run in the top of the second for another brief one-run lead. Redshirt senior Matt LaRocca reached on an error and crossed the plate after back-to-back singles from Havrilak and senior infielder Matt Rembielak.
The Falcons again knotted the game at 2-all in their half of the second with an RBI single.
Both teams remained scoreless until the Falcon's exploded for a five-run fifth inning that featured a pair of Akron miscues and three hits, including one double. Bowling Green led 7-2 following the fifth and expanded its lead with a two-run seventh.
Redshirt senior starting pitcher Jon Pusateri was tagged with the loss, bringing his record to 3-5. The right-hander logged 4.0 innings on the mound and allowed eight hits and five runs, three earned. Pusateri walked two and fanned one.
Relievers Evan Jensen and Zach Beaver each posted a scoreless inning of relief.
Bowling Green starter Zac Carey (5-3) picked up the win after allowing seven hits and two runs, one earned, over 8.0 innings pitched.
Overall, each team stranded 10 total runners on base. Bowling Green out-hit Akron 17-9. There were seven total errors on the afternoon as Akron posted three and Bowling Green registered four.
The Zips return to action next weekend when they host Buffalo for a three-game MAC series at Lee R. Jackson Field. The series begins on Friday, May 8 with a 3 p.m. first pitch and continues on Saturday and Sunday at 1 p.m.
