Three Men's Golfers Earn Academic All-MAC Accolades

CLEVELAND – For just the second time in program history, three Akron men's golfers have been named to the Academic All-MAC team, the Mid-American Conference office announced on Monday.
The Zips also had a program-best three selections during the 2012-13 season. Akron's three selections tied Eastern Michigan for the most among the league's nine programs. A total of 16 student-athletes were named to the academic team.
Juniors Louis Birchall and Ryan Harris were named Academic All-MAC for the second-straight year while Zach Gollwitzer earned his first honor.
Birchall, who owns a 3.810 GPA in biology, appeared in all 11 events for the Zips, posting a team-best 75.15 scoring average over 33 rounds. He posted one top-five and three top-25 finishes this season while carding four rounds of par or better this season. In addition to being named Academic All-MAC, Birchall was named MAC Golfer of the Week on October 8 after finishing in second place at The Firestone Invitational, nearly winning the event.
Harris appeared in 10-of-11 events this season, posting a 75.53 scoring average over 30 rounds. He posted two top-25 finishes. Harris finished the season with five rounds of par or better, and 20-of-30 rounds scored at 76 or better. Harris is a business administration major with a 3.400 cumulative GPA.
Gollwitzer, a marketing management major with a 3.881 GPA, appeared in eight events during his sophomore campaign. He posted a 77.30 scoring average over 23 rounds played. He posted two rounds of par or better, including career-low rounds of 72 at the Golfweek Program Challenge and Fall Preview at Sagamore, and recorded 12 rounds of 77 or better.
The Academic All-MAC honor is for a student-athlete who has excelled in athletics and academics. To qualify, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.20 cumulative GPA and have participated in at least 50 percent of the contests for that particular sport.
