AKRON, Ohio— Carla Flores Perez has signed a National Letter of Intent to attend the University of Akron and play tennis next fall, head coach Brandon Padgett announced on Tuesday.
The Saltillo, Mexico, native participated in the 2012 National Olympic Games. At Nationals. Flores Perez finished third in singles in 2015 and second in doubles in 2014. She is ranked No. 1 in her state (Coachuila) for U-18-21 and No. 10 in U-18-21 nationally.
A graduate of the Instituto de Ensenanza Abierta, Flores Perez is a two-time recipient of the Excellence Award and the 2015 Academic Award. She has more than 100 hours of community service helping disadvantaged children with their studies. Flores Perez intends to go medical school.
"We are excited about the addition of Carla to our tennis family," Padgett said. "She is extremely athletic and will provide a new dimension of athlete to our team. Carla's upside is enormous, and her lack of international experience doesn't scare us, knowing what we know about her athleticism, work ethic, and high-level skill set. We cannot wait to get started with Carla, as she explores with us, just at how high of a level she can truly succeed."
She joins Luisa Fernanda Echeverry Rodriguez (Cali, Colombia) as an incoming freshman. Overall, the Zips' roster has an international flavor. Seven of the eight student-athletes hail from other countries.
