AKRON, Ohio— Carli Knezevich (Austin, Texas) and Waverly Wituski (Springboro, Ohio) have transferred to The University of Akron and will join the women's tennis team this fall, head coach Brandon Padgett announced on Tuesday.
"I could not be happier to have Carli and Waverly join our tennis family," Padgett said. "Both are excellent players, but more importantly, exceptional young women. We will have a large roster this year, but a deep roster filled with talented, smart student-athletes, which will allow us more flexibility than ever before. Every player that we have can, and likely will, make an impact on our season, and I can't wait to get started."
Knezevich recently completed her freshman season at Abilene Christian University. She finished the spring at 2-2 in singles and 10-3 in doubles action. Last fall, Knezevich went 6-7 in singles and 7-5 in doubles play. A graduate of Lake Travis High School, Knezevich was a two-time 5A Texas State Championships qualifier in doubles.
"I chose the University of Akron, because I felt like it was going to give me the best overall college experience, not only on the court but off the court as well," Knezevich said. "The coaches, campus, and city were really impressive to me. I can really see myself thriving in the environment that Akron provides, and I'm excited for the opportunities they have to offer. Go Zips!"
Wituski recently completed her freshman year at DePauw University where she redshirted. A three-year letterwinner from Archbishop Alter, she was the 2013 Conference Player of the Year as well as a two-time All-Conference selection.
"I choose Akron, because I absolutely loved the school and the tennis coaches," Wituski said. "The minute I stepped on campus, I knew I wanted to spend the next three to four years here. I feel like it is the place where I can grow into the person I want to be."
They join incoming freshman signees Luisa Fernanda Echeverry Rodriguez (Cali, Colombia) and Carla Flores Perez (Saltillo, Mexico).
