AKRON, Ohio— Hosting two fall tournaments and visiting Wisconsin and Tennessee in the spring highlight the 2015-16 Akron women's tennis schedule, head coach Brandon Padgett announced on Wednesday.
The Zips host an Alumni event on Sept. 12 before opening the season with the annual Akron Shootout, featuring Cleveland State, Maryland-Baltimore County, and Youngstown State on Sept 18-20 at the outdoor tennis facility.
UA travels to Army's West Point Invitational on Sept. 25-27 before returning home to host Cornell, Missouri-Kansas City, and West Virginia in its own Akron Invitational on Oct. 2-4.
The Zips close out the fall season at Buffalo's Tournament on Oct. 9-11 and at the ITA Regional Championships on Oct. 22-27 in Ann Arbor, Mich.
"We are still extremely young, but I have set our schedule up well to provide strong tests throughout the entire season," Padgett said. "We plan to continue the building that we did last season with a deep and talented roster, as we hope to make a serious push in conference this season. I am excited about both the fall and spring portions of our schedule, and know that both will assist in the preparation for Mid-American Conference play."
Akron opens its spring slate at Pittsburgh on Jan. 15-16. UA returns home for four consecutive matches with IUPUI (Jan. 29), Youngstown State (Jan. 30), James Madison (Feb. 6), and West Virginia (Feb. 7). The Zips travel to UW-Milwaukee (Feb. 12) and UI-Chicago (Feb. 13).
On Feb. 20, Akron hosts Valparaiso in the morning before taking on Morgan State in an afternoon match. The Zips play Maryland-Baltimore County and Oakland on Feb. 28.
UA travels to Tennessee to face East Tennessee State (March 4) and Winthrop (March 5). The Zips then visit Cleveland State (March 9).
On March 12, Akron hosts Detroit and Walsh. UA travels to New Orleans to meet Tulane (March 19) and Southeastern Louisiana (March 21).
The Zips open Mid-American Conference play at Eastern Michigan (March 25) before hosting Toledo in their home MAC opener (March 27). UA visits Northern Illinois (April 1) before returning home for matches with Western Michigan (April 3), and Ball State (April 8). Akron travels to Miami (Ohio) (April 10). UA hosts Buffalo in its home finale (April 16). The Zips close the regular season on April 22 at Bowling Green and Findlay.
The 2016 MAC Championships are slated for April 24-26 at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio.
The 2016 NCAA Championships will be held May 19-30 at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center in Tulsa, Okla.
Led by a lone senior, the Zips closed the 2014-15 season with a 11-1 overall record (3-5 MAC). Akron won the 2011 and 2012 MAC Tournaments and advanced to the NCAA Tournament both years. In 2013, UA's seniors Angelina Jogasuria and Prang Pantusart were selected to compete in the NCAA Doubles Championship.
