KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C. – The University of Akron men's golf team fell to ninth overall at The Invitational on the par-72, 7,115-yard Ocean Course in Kiawah Island, S.C. The Zips entered the final round 18-over and added 21 strokes for a final round score of 309, bringing the tournament total to 903 (+39).
Sophomore George Baylis (Ascot, England) entered the final round tied at 25th and advanced six positions to finish tied for the 19th spot. Baylis followed his two previous rounds of 71 and 79 with a 74 to finish with a three-round total of 224 (+8).
Redshirt freshman Elliott Grayson (Shelby, N.C.) carded a final round 79 to finish with 229 (+13) while junior J.B. Williams (Danville, Ky.) ended play with an 82 and a 232(+16). Junior Yann Pfeiffer (Saint-Nom-la-Breteche, France) posted an 81 for a 234 (+18) total.
Also, climbing the leader board and rounding out the scoring for the Zips, were seniors Louis Birchall (Ingestre Park, England) and Ryan Harris (Carlisle, Mass.). Birchall moved four spots to 56th with a 78 and 234 (+18) tournament total while Harris moved-up one spot to 66th with a 78 and 237 (+21) total.
"We are doing a lot of things very well, but making a few too many mistakes against great competition," head coach David Trainor said. "The demanding course and demanding weather conditions caused some problems, but I think we let it get to us."
No. 48 Georgia Southern overcame a 5-stroke deficit to claim the tournament title. The Eagles finished with a final round 290 to win by for strokes with an 873 (+9).
The College of Charleston's William Rainey earned medalist with a field-best, 5-under par with rounds of 70, 70, 71 -211 while Georgia Sothern's Cody O'Toole finished second overall with a 3-under par 212 strokes.
The Zips return to action on Monday, September 21, traveling to Toledo, Ohio for the two-day Inverness Intercollegiate at Inverness Golf Course.
