Women's Tennis Opens Fall Season By Hosting Akron Shootout

AKRON, Ohio— The University of Akron women's tennis team opens its 2015 fall schedule on Friday, Sept. 18 by hosting its own Akron Shootout.
"We are excited to start the fall season, especially at home," said head coach Brandon Padgett. "We will be playing six of our nine players this weekend, and we are looking for consistent, hard fought effort from everyone playing."
Padgett's squad returns five performers from last season and welcomes four newcomers. Team captains Shannon Newnes (Romford, London) and Sophia Geier (Burgebrach, Germany) are back as well as Martina Zerbola (Neuquen, Argentina), Karolina Maksimova (Mogilev, Belarus), and Ariadna Blinova (Riga, Latvia). They're joined by sophomore transfers Carli Knezevich (Austin, Texas) and Waverly Wituski (Springboro, Ohio) in addition to freshmen Carla Flores (Saltillo, Mexico) and Luisa Echeverry (Cali, Columbia).
"We have four new players this year, and I couldn't be happier with their effort and ability, as well as who they are as individuals," Padgett continued. "This team is a joy to coach, and I can't wait to see the personal and physical growth each player has (returners as well), between the fall and spring seasons."
The Akron Shootout will get underway at 9 a.m. with singles matches between Cleveland State and Maryland-Baltimore County (UMBC). Doubles action begins at Noon with CSU taking on Youngstown State, while Akron faces UMBC. At 1 p.m., the Zips host YSU in singles action.
On Saturday, Sept. 19, play resumes at 9 a.m. with the Vikings facing Youngstown State in singles. Doubles begin at Noon features the Penguins against UMBC, and Akron playing CSU. At 1 p.m., UA hosts the Retrievers in singles action.
On Sunday, Sept. 20, YSU and UMBC square off in singles at 9 a.m. In doubles action at Noon, Cleveland State takes on Maryland, while Akron plays Youngstown State. The tournament concludes with singles play between Akron and CSU, beginning at 1 p.m.
