AKRON, Ohio— Zips women's tennis officially opened its 2015 fall schedule on Friday, Sept. 18, with its own Akron Shootout.
"Today went pretty much as expected," said head coach Brandon Padgett. "We had some strong results, and some areas where we need to continue to improve, but overall, the effort was extremely strong from everyone, and I am certainly pleased with that."
In singles action against Youngstown State, Akron won three of the six matches. At No. 2, Ariadna Blinova defeated Dominika Lackova, 3-6, 7-6 (6), 1-0 (2). At No. 4, Echeverry beat Nehel Sahni, 6-0, 6-4. At No. 6, Wituski defeated Julianna Heino, 6-1, 6-3.
"Ari did a great job of battling while sick, and managed to put together a strong enough performance to take down a very talented player." Padgett continued. "In their first ever collegiate match, Luisa and Waverly picked up a doubles win together, and then both went on to win their singles matches in straight sets, so I know that they are pleased with how they did, and so am I."
In doubles play, at No. 3, newcomers Luisa Echeverry and Waverly Wituski defeated UMBC's Laura Ambrozic and Alice Taylor, 6-4.
"We didn't have favorable match-ups in doubles today, but hopefully tomorrow brings about a renewed level of focus and determination, allowing us to have the opportunity to be more successful." Padgett concluded. "Overall, the team played well and we will work to clean up the unforced errors, allowing us to not best ourselves."
All play is round-robin. Team scores are not kept.
Play resumes at 8 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 19, with Cleveland State facing Youngstown State in singles. Doubles begin at 11 a.m. with YSU UMBC, and Akron playing CSU. At 12 p.m., Akron hosts UMBC in singles action.
