AKRON, Ohio — The University of Akron women's tennis team claimed six overall matches on the second day of its own Akron Shootout on Saturday, Sept. 19.
"Today I saw what I was hoping to see, a change in mindset in both singles and doubles," said head coach Brandon Padgett. "We still weren't able to pull out more than one doubles win, but the mindset was there, and the effort was certainly there."
In doubles action against Cleveland State, Akron won one of the three matches. At the No. 3 spot, Luisa Echeverry and Waverly Wituski defeated Jana Schober and Katy Quillin, 6-4.
"As for singles, I couldn't be happier," said Padgett. "The weather today was difficult, with the wind whipping around the courts, and rain coming and going throughout the day, but each player focused in, fought hard, and showed a level of determination that has been missing. Winning five out of six against a team that did the same yesterday wasn't easy, but we showed perseverance and grit."
In singles action against Maryland-Baltimore County (UMBC), all six matches went to three sets where Akron prevailed in five of the six tiebreakers. At No. 2, sophomore Ariadna Blinova defeated Maria Siopacha, 3-6, 6-4, 1-0 (7). At No. 3, junior Shannon Newnes beat Madlena Kurasz, 3-6, 6-0, 1-0 (5). At the No. 4 spot, Echeverry defeated Alice Taylor, 7-6 (5), 1-6, 1-0 (6).
Senior Martina Zerbola took down Laura Ambrozic at No. 5 4-6, 6-2, 1-0 (2) while Wituski continued her outstanding start, knocking off UMBC's No. 6 singles player, Aishu Iyer, 6-2, 3-6, 1-0 (6).
"Each player was impressive today in some respect," Padgett concluded. "As a team, we showed that if we focus on what we do as individual players, and not on what our opponents want to do, we can be extremely successful. I am excited to see how we move forward after an excellent day on the courts today."
UMBC swept all three doubles matches against Youngstown State while YSU claimed four out of the six singles matches against CSU.
All play is round-robin. Team scores are not kept.
Play concludes on Sunday with Youngstown State taking on UMBC in singles play at 9 a.m. followed by doubles action between Cleveland State and UMBC as well as Akron and YSU at noon. The Zips finish the tournament with singles play against Cleveland State at 1 p.m. The results and schedule are listed below.
