AKRON, Ohio — The University of Akron women's tennis team finished the Akron Shootout playing a round of doubles against Youngstown State and a round of singles against Cleveland State.
The Zips took five of six singles matches against the Vikings led by sophomore Ariadna Blinova, who defeated Morgan Nix, 6-2, 6-3, at the No. 2 spot. Shannon Newnes claimed a 6-7 (5), 6-1, 10-4 decision over Mathilde Orange at the No.3 spot while Luisa Echeverry took the No. 4 spot with a win over Victoria Bensimon (6-0, 4-6, 10-2). Martina Zerbola and Waverly Wituski also earned victories at No. 5 and No. 6 singles, respectively.
"Today was exactly what I was hoping to see," said head coach Brandon Padgett. "The team continued to build from the previous two days of play and I couldn't be happier with the overall team performance. Winning seven out of nine matches on the final day is a great way to end the tournament."
In doubles action against Youngstown State, Akron won two of the three matches. At the No. 2 spot, Newnes and Zerbola overcame Annina Brendal and Sofia Macias, 7-5. Echeverry and Wituski, who both went undefeated for the weekend, beat Julianna Heino and Nehel Sahni, 6-2.
"Doubles was much better today, with each team showing vast improvement as the weekend progressed while in singles, everyone played exceptionally well." Padgett continued. "We hope to use the momentum from this weekend and build upon it as the fall season continues."
In the other singles match, Maryland-Baltimore County (UMBC) won four of six matches over Youngstown State.
All play at the three-day tourney was round robin. Team scores were not kept.
"I want to thank the facilities guys and training staff for their exceptional work this weekend," Padgett concluded. "The tournament would not have been possible without their help."
Akron travels to West Point, N.Y., on Sept. 25-27 to participate in the West Point Invitational.
