Men's Golf to Compete at the Inverness Intercollegiate

AKRON, Ohio – The University of Akron men's golf team returns to action on Monday and Tuesday, Sept. 21-22 at the Inverness Intercollegiate hosted by the University of Toledo.
Akron's second outing will be played at the par-71, 7,300-yard Inverness Club, which has played host to four U.S. Opens, two U.S. Senior Opens, two PGA Championships, the U.S. Amateur, and the NCAA Men's Golf Championships.
The Zips enter the Inverness Intercollegiate after a ninth-place 903 (+39) season-opening performance at the Invitational, and looks to achieve a second Top 10 finish with this week's five-man roster.
The starting lineup includes two of the Zips' top finishers from last week, sophomore George Baylis (Ascot, Englandwill) and redshirt freshman Elliott Grayson (Shelby, N.C.). They will be joined by juniors J.B. Williams (Danville, Ky.), Yann Pfeiffer (Saint-Nom-la-Breteche, France), and Zach Gollwitzer (Ballwin, Mo.).
Baylis led the Zips' scoring efforts with a 224 (+8), and climbed six positions on the leaderboard during the final round to finish tied at 19th overall. Grayson followed with a 229 (+13) performance while Williams and Pfeiffer added scores of 232 (+16) and 234 (+18), respectively. Gollwitzer enters his first tournament of the season.
"I am looking forward to the Inverness Intercollegiate and the opportunity to play on a major championship venue against great competition," Zips head coach, David Trainor said. "Inverness is extremely difficult, and the field is just as good. We had a great week of practice, and I think we are ready."
The 15-team field features 10 Golfstat Top 100 teams from a year ago, including No. 23 California, No. 32 Alabama-Birmingham (UAB), No. 39 East Tennessee State, No. 52 Ohio State, No. 54 Michigan, No. 55 Purdue, No. 69 Yale, No. 84 Michigan State, No. 86 Mercer and No. 99 Kent State. The remaining five teams include, host Toledo, Akron, Austin Peay, Miami (Ohio) and Northern Illinois.
The 54-hole event is scheduled to begin on Monday at 8:30 a.m. with a shotgun start and continuous play for 36 holes. Tuesday's final round is scheduled for 8:00 a.m.

In 2014, East Tennessee State (878, +26) used a two-stroke advantage to claim the tournament title over runner-up South Florida (880, +28), while ETSU's Adrian Meronk earned medalist accolades with an even-par 213 strokes.
