WEST POINT, N.Y. -- Waverly Wituski advanced herself to the round of 32 in Flight 4 singles to lead the Akron women's tennis team on Friday in day one of the West Point Invitational, hosted by Army.
In Flight 1 of the doubles round, Sophia Geier and Carli Knezevich lost 6-2 to UConn's No. 4 seed Jacqueline Fitz-Randolph and Srna Stoslievic, and Carla Flores and Wituski dropped an 6-3 decision to Quinnipiac's Alex Mircea and Adrian Young.
"Today we felt the effects of yesterday's eight hours of traveling, especially early on," said head coach Brandon Padgett. "As the day went on, we seemed to pick up our energy level. We had some tough draws, but overall, today's play was solid, but not great."
In flight 1 singles, Geier lost to Binghamton's Sara Kohtz 6-4, 6-3. After earning a bye in the first round, Knezevich fell 6-7 (4), 6-4, 1-0 (9) to Seton Hall's No. 7 seed Thandiew Kangwa. In Flight 3 singles, Flores topped Kata Ina Pavlovic in a 4-6, 6-1, 1-0 (10) decision.
Wituski rebounded with a 6-0, 4-6, 1-0 (2) win over St. Bonaventure's Lauren Doversola in Flight 3 singles. However, Wituski fell to No. 1 seed Jacqueline Lazaro, 4-6, 6-4, 1-0 (7) in Flight 4 singles.
"Waverly had another strong day, and was close to upsetting her top seeded opponent, and her effort was once again superb," Padgett continued. "It was extremely visible that today was the first match of the season for some, and they picked up their level as the day went on. We will continue to work hard, and hopefully tomorrow will bring about better results, with the appropriate amount of rest."
Competition resumes on Saturday at 9 a.m. ET. The event runs through Sunday.
