WEST POINT, N.Y. -- The University of Akron tennis team closed out its participation at this weekend's West Point Invitational with players competing in the consolation rounds of Flight 1 singles and both Flight 2 singles and doubles. The three-day event was hosted by Army.
Sophia Geier led the Zips by winning the Flight 1 consolation final. She defeated LIU's Leysen in the semifinals (8-2) before taking down Marist's Pang, 8-5, in the final match.
"We definitely turned things around after starting the tournament off 2-5, finishing the tournament with an overall match record of 10-9," said head coach Brandon Padgett. "Sophia rebounded extremely well after her opening round loss to win the consolation finals. Overall, I am pleased with the effort and results this early in the fall. We get back to work tomorrow, working toward continuously improving individually, and as a team."
In Flight 2 singles consolation, Carli Knezevich fell to Army's Valiunaite (8-5) while Carla Flores and Waverly Wituski dropped a 6-3 decision in the Flight 2 doubles semifinals.
The Zips will prepare to host its own Akron Invitational on Oct. 2-4. UA will welcome Cornell, the University of Missouri-Kansas City (UMKC) and West Virginia.
