Cleveland, Ohio – Senior J.B. Williams (Danville, Ky.) was named Mid-American Conference Men's Co-Golfer of the Week for his performance at the ODU/OBX Intercollegiate, the league announced Thursday.
Williams shared the award with Kent State's Chase Johnson. Over the last week, both, Williams and Johnson fired 207 (-6) performances. Williams earned third overall on the leaderboard at the ODU/OBX Intercollegiate and Johnson claimed fifth at the Royal Oaks Intercollegiate.
Williams' 6-under effort was a result of three consecutive under-par performances at the ODU/OBX Intercollegiate. He opened the three-day, 54-hole event with a 4-under 67 effort and followed with back-to-back 1-under 70 scores. He carded a tournament-best seven birdies in the opener and completed the tournament with 35 pars, 13 birdies, four bogeys and two double bogeys.
"I am very proud of J.B. and the success he has experienced this fall," Zips' head coach David Trainor said. "His attitude and effort played a big role in what he was able to accomplish. He expressed to me he was just scratching the surface, so I can't wait to see what he can do in the spring."
Over the last three events, Williams has shot par or better 8-of-9 rounds, including five performances below par in the last six rounds – par was the sixth score. The run started at the Zips' third event, Akron's Firestone Invitational. He opened the tournament with par, shot a subpar 70, and finished with a 3-over round to be 1-over for the tournament and 23rd on the leaderboard.
Williams followed as the team's low scorer and second place overall finisher at the Mountaineer Intercollegiate. He fired a 5-under 211 tournament total that included rounds of 69 (-3), 70 (-2), and 72 (E).
Williams led the Zips' in three of the five spring tournaments en route to a team-low 72.36 stroke average, which ranks third overall in MAC play. He posted a team-high three Top 25 finishes, finishing tied for second (Mountaineer Intercollegiate), 23rd (Firestone Invitational), and 3rd (ODU/OBX Intercollegiate).
Also during the fall schedule, he fired a team-best eight rounds of par or better, including six rounds below par and two tournament finishes under-par. He is one of three Zips to record rounds of 67 and one of four to achieve 69 stroke total.
