Women's Tennis Set to Compete in Viking Invitational

AKRON, Ohio — The University of Akron women's tennis team will continue its fall season on the road this weekend, as the Zips travel to Cleveland State to compete in the Viking Invitational at the Medical Mutual Tennis Pavilion. The tournament will run from Friday, October 7 to Sunday, October 9.
"This weekend will be our biggest challenge of the fall thus far, and I am excited to see how we match up against some strong competition," said head coach Brandon Padgett. "Each tournament we are focused on improving from match to match, and this weekend will be no different."
Joining Akron and Cleveland State in the tournament, are Duquesne and West Virginia.
At the conclusion of play, there will be a Viking Invitational Singles Champion and Viking Invitational Doubles Champion. Points will be awarded based on lineup position, with the singles player and doubles team with the most points after three days of play being crowned champions.
The Medical Mutual Tennis Pavilion is Cleveland State's on-campus indoor facility, which features six temperature controlled courts and spectator seating for 200 fans. Construction of the MMTP was completed during the spring of 2016, with the first match being held on March 9, 2016 between Cleveland State and Akron. Senior Shannon Newnes (Romford, London) and sophomore Luisa Echeverry (Cali, Columbia) were crowned the Flight 4 singles champions at the Wright State Invitational this past weekend.
Junior Ariadna Blinova (Riga, Latvia) will then head to Malibu, California to play in the 2016 Oracle/ITA Masters on October 13-16. This national collegiate championship event will be held at Pepperdine University and the Malibu Racquet Club.
