Kohler, Wisc. – Zips' sophomore George Baylis (Ascot, England) made the program's third all-time individual appearance for the NCAA Men's Golf Championships at the Kohler Regional on Monday. Baylis finished the initial 18-holes of the 54-hole event ranked 62nd overall with a 76 (+4) effort at the par 72, 7,123-yard Blackwolf Run Meadow Valleys Course in Kohler, Wisc.
"George played well from tee to green today," Zips' head coach David Trainor said. "Unfortunately, he made three bad swings which cost him a few strokes. I expect him to continue his solid play and capitalize on opportunities that he creates."
Baylis started the scoring on the first hole. He opened the round with a birdie on hole No. 1, a 382-yard par 4, and remained 1-under through the second and third holes. However, Baylis fell back to even-par with a bogey on the 565-yard par 5 fourth and maintained even play for the next two holes, five and six.
On hole No. 7, a 520-yard par 5, Baylis moved to 2-under with an eagle, but returned to even-par after a double-bogey on eight. He followed with two additional doubles before recovering with his second eagle of the day, moving to 2-over after 11 holes of play.
Again, Baylis notched back-to-back par scores on 12 and 13 to remain 2-over par, but added two strokes to his total with a pair of bogeys. Baylis finished the opening round strong with three consecutive pars en route to the 76 (+4) total.
Currently, there is a four-way tie at the top of the leaderboard at 69 (-3) and a six-player stalemate for fifth overall at 70 (-2).
Round two is scheduled to begin at 8 a.m. CT on holes No. 1 and No. 10. Baylis will be playing with Sydney Chung, Memphis, and Lloyd Jefferson, Seton Hall. The group will tee off at 9:50-10 a.m. CT from the 10th tee.
