Baylis Finishes NCAA Kohler Regional with an Even-Par Round

Kohler, Wis. –Zips' sophomore George Baylis (Ascot, Engand) wrapped up the 2016 season on Wednesday with an even-par 72 performance at the Kohler Regional round of the 2016 NCAA Men's Golf Championships. Baylis finished 43rd overall with a 54-hole total of 221 (+5) at the 7,123-yard par 72 Blackwolf Run Meadow Valleys Course.
"I'm very proud of George," Zips' head coach David Trainor said. "The golf course was very demanding, and he played very good golf. He has come a long way, not only this week, but this year. His attention to detail, work ethic, overall drive and immense talent served him well this week, this year and will for years to come."
Baylis entered the final round with previous scores of 76 (+4) and 73 (+1), ranking 50th overall with a 149 (+5) 36-hole tournament total. On the final day of competition, he carded 12 pars, four birdies, a bogey, and a triple-bogey to move up seven positions on the leaderboard.
Baylis opened the round on the 10th tee with a par and recorded a birdie on No. 11, a 522-yard par 5, for a 1-under score. He maintained the 1-under tally through hole No. 16, registering five-consecutive par scores.
Baylis needed three extra strokes to finish the 17th hole before recording the round's seventh par and finishing the back-9 with a 2-over par 38-stroke effort.
On the front-9, Baylis continued to play even-par golf, recording par on three-straight holes. On hole No. 4, Baylis only needed four swings to complete the 565-yard par 5, moving one stroke closer to even par for the day with his second birdie.
After securing an even score on hole No. 5, Baylis' scorecard returned to even after carding his third birdie for the day on the 470-yard par 4 sixth hole. He continued the scoring with a birdie on eight for a 1-under score, but ended the round with a bogey to remain even on the day.
The No. 4 ranked Illinois captured the Kohler Regional team title with an 853 (-11) 54-hole team total while Ohio State's Tee-K Kelly came from behind to claim the individual championship with a 209 (-7) total.
The NCAA Championships consists of 81 teams and 45 individuals throughout six 54-hole regional tournaments. The low five squads and the low individual not on those teams from each regional will advance to the finals on Friday, May 27 to Wednesday, June 1 at Eugene Country Club in Eugene, Ore.
The teams moving on from the Kohler Regional are the regional champions, No. 4 Illinois, followed by No. 16 Florida, No. 21 Arkansas, No. 10 Florida State, and No. 28 Baylor. In addition, Kelly (OSU) earned medalist honors and was the lowest scoring individual to qualify for the national tournament.
The 2016 NCAA Kohler Regional concludes the Zips' men's golf season.
