Akron, Ohio – The Akron Zips men's golf team is staying busy this offseason as Yann Pfeiffer (Saint-Nom-la-Bretèche, France) and Jacob Appleby (North Canton, Ohio) posted tournament wins while Elliott Grayson (Shelby, N.C.) prepares for the U.S. Open Sectionals.
Pfeiffer, a returning senior, entered the Saint-Cloud Grand Prix, a three-day amateur golf tournament that attracts the best French amateur players. The 54-hole event is held at the Saint-Cloud Golf Club, a private club with two 18-hole courses, the Green and Yellow Courses, located just outside Paris. Pfeiffer earned the tournament championship with rounds of 66 (-5), 74 (+3), and 70 (-1) for a 210 (-3) performance at the 6,492-yard, par 71 Green Course.
"Earning a win in France gives me more confidence heading into next season," Pfeiffer said. "My next goal is to post my first win at Akron next year. It would be a great accomplishment for my senior year."
Appleby, a returning freshman, also topped the leaderboard just weeks after the Zips' season ended at the Zoar Memorial Amateur Championship held at Zoar Village Golf Course, a par 72 that stretches 6,700 yards, in Dover, Ohio on May 28-29. Appleby established the lead after the first round of the 36-hole event, carding a 2-under par 70. He followed with a 7-under par 65 effort, just one stroke shy of the course record, to finish nine strokes better than the runner-up with a 135 (-9) two-round total.
"My game feels comfortable at the moment," Appleby said. "That is the only way to describe it. I have put a lot of good work in, and I'm looking forward to the rest of the summer."
On May 9, Grayson, a returning sophomore, qualified for the U.S. Open Sectional tournament with a second-place showing at the U.S. Open Local event. The 36-hole U.S. Open Sectional Qualifier will be held at Woodmont Country Club (North Course) in Rockville, Md. on Monday, June 6.
