AKRON, Ohio – Several members of the University of Akron men's golf program have played fabulous golf this offseason. The most recent accomplishments include three tournament-qualifying performances, two tournament wins, and a U.S. Open sectional qualifying effort, coming from Yann Pfeiffer (Saint-Nom-la-Bretèche, France), Euan Gill (Dingwall, Scotland), Mitchell McFarland (Wheelersburg, Ohio), Jacob Appleby (North Canton, Ohio), and Elliott Grayson (Shelby, N.C.).
Pfeiffer, a returning senior, started the summer with a win at the Saint-Cloud Grand Prix amateur golf tournament. A week later, he finished third overall with a 1-under par 71 at Monday's qualifying event for the Najeti Open, which takes the Top 4 scores from the qualifier. Pfeiffer qualified and will join the field at the 2016 Najeti Open at Saint-Omer Golf Club on June 16-19. The Najeti Open is a Challenge Tour Event, the European Tour equivalent to a Web.com Tour Event.
Meanwhile in Scotland, Gill, a returning sophomore, earned medalist honors at the Strathpeffer Men's Amateur Open. He captured the event championship after a rough start and recovering to finish the first round with 71 strokes. The second round was much different, as Gill fired a field-low 65 score en route to a 136 tournament total for the win.
McFarland, an incoming freshman, posted this week's second win, earning a co-medalist with a 1-over par 71 at the Ohio Amateur qualifying event at Portage Country Club in Akron. With the win, McFarland qualified for the Ohio Amateur Championship at Findlay Country Club on July 12-16 in Findlay, Ohio.
Also qualifying for the Ohio Amateur Championship Tournament was Appleby. The Zips' returning freshman finished eighth overall with a 73 (+3) 18-hole round at the same qualifier at Portage C.C. Appleby started the offseason with an amateur win at the Zoar Memorial Amateur Championship with a 9-under par 135 two-round total.
Grayson, a returning sophomore, kicked-off the Zips' summer session with a second place finish at the U.S. Open local qualifier and advanced to the U.S. Open sectional qualifying round. At the U.S. Open sectional qualifier, Grayson placed 28th overall, carding rounds of 75 (+3) and 74 (+2) for a 149 (+5) tournament total. The one-day, 36-hole event featured 55 players with three advancing to the U.S. Open at Oakmont Country Club on June 13-16.
