Norman, Okla. – For the second-consecutive year, seniors Louis Birchall (Ingestre Park, England) and Ryan Harris (Carlisle, Mass.) were named to the Cleveland Golf/Srixon All-America Scholars team, as announced by the Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA) on Wednesday.
"I am extremely proud of Louis and Ryan," Zips' head coach David Trainor said. "It's a tremendous honor and achievement to earn this award for a second time. It shows their dedication to golf and academics, especially considering the criteria to qualify for the award (76 stroke average and 3.2 overall GPA) combined with the level of competition we play on some of the most difficult courses in the country."
Birchall, a geography and planning major, appeared on the Dean's List seven times in his academic career while maintaining a 3.853 GPA.
Birchall returned to All-America Scholar status by appearing in seven of the Zips' 11 events in 2015-16. In 20 rounds of golf, Birchall posted a 75.85 stroke average and carded five rounds of par or better. He fired a season-low, 54-hole score at the Zips' Firestone Invitational. In addition, Birchall finished in the Top 25 and was Akron's low scorer at the Wexford Intercollegiate with a 24th-best, 221 (+5) performance. During that tournament, he recorded a season-low 18-hole round of 1-under par 71 strokes.
Harris, a sports management major, appeared on the Dean's List seven times throughout his academic career with a 3.417 GPA.
Harris also received his second All-America Scholar award, playing in eight of the Zips' 11 events this season. He posted a third-best 75.04 stroke average, while carding five rounds of par or better. He fired a pair of 3-under par season-low scores of 68 (-3) and 69 (-3) while finishing in the Mid-American Conference's Top 25 in scoring at 21st overall. On the season, Harris finished in the Top 15 twice and had four Top 25 appearances.
A total of 212 Division I men's golfers received the honor. To be eligible for Cleveland Golf/Srixon All-America Scholar status an individual must be a junior or senior academically, compete in at least three full years at the collegiate level, participate in 50 percent of his team's competitive rounds, have a stroke-average under 76.0, and maintain a minimum cumulative career grade-point average of 3.2. A recipient must also be of high moral character and be in good standing at his college or university.
