TEMPE, Ariz. – The University of Akron women's tennis team earned ITA All-Academic Team honors, the Intercollegiate Tennis Association announced.
Additionally, three Zips were named 2016 ITA Scholar-Athletes— freshman Luisa Echeverry (Cali, Columbia), sophomore Sophia Geier (Burgebrach, Germany), and senior Martina Zerbola (Neuquen, Argentina).
"I am extremely proud of the effort in and out of the classroom from our outstanding student-athletes," said Zips' head coach Brandon Padgett. "We had several players come extremely close to joining Luisa, Martina, and Sophia on this list, which ensured that the team as a whole, qualified for this prestigious award. Finding a successful balance between academics and athletics is not an easy task, but these young women manage to be truly amazing at it."
The ITA All-Academic Team award is open to any ITA member program that has a cumulative team grade-point average of 3.20 or above (on a 4.00 scale). The Zips finished the 2015-16 year with a 3.363 team GPA. Akron has received this recognition in six of the last seven years.
In order to earn ITA Scholar-Athlete status, a player must meet the following criteria: be a varsity letterwinner, have a grade-point average of at least 3.50 (on a 4.00 scale) for the current academic year, and have been enrolled at her present school for at least two semesters (including freshman thorough senior year).
Akron concluded the 2015-16 season at 15-10 overall and 5-3 MAC.
