Men's Golf: Jacob Appleby's Summer Success Continues

Akron, Ohio – Zips' returning freshman golfer Jacob Appleby (North Canton, Ohio) is having an outstanding summer, earning medalist in his last two events to go along with the previously reported win at the Zoar Memorial Amateur Championship earlier this summer.
"Jacob has played great this summer," Zips' head coach David Trainor said. "I'm looking forward to him playing great for us this fall. Jacob has an outstanding skill set that will help us achieve our goal of winning a MAC Championship."
On Aug. 1, he won the 2016 Record-Courier Portage County Amateur Open Division and followed by a win at the 2016 Summit County Amateur Golf Championship a week later.
At the Portage County event, Appleby secured the open division championship at the Record-Courier amateur by four strokes. He carded an even-par 72 opening round 18-hole total at Windmill Lakes Golf Club in Ravenna, Ohio. Appleby followed with a 74 (+2) final round performance at Oak Hills Golf Club in Kent, claiming the title with a two-over par 146 tournament total.
On Aug. 7, Appleby won his second-consecutive medalist honor at the Summit County Amateur at Good Park Golf Course in Akron. He opened the tournament with a two-shot lead, firing a five-under par 66 first round score. He followed with a 3-over par 74 effort, maintaining a two-shot lead over the field for 2-under par 140 championship total.
Earlier this summer, Appleby won the Zoar Memorial Amateur Championship, finishing nine strokes better than the runner-up with a 135 (-9) two-round total.
The UA men's golf team will return to campus in two weeks and begin preparing for the 2016-17 season.
