Akron, Ohio – The 2016-17 Akron Zips men's golf schedule showcases 11 events on premier golf courses around the U.S. The Zips will return to seven events from last season and add four new destinations, head coach David Trainor announced on Friday.
The Zips will play five fall events, including its own Firestone Invitational at the world-famous Firestone Country Club. Six events are scheduled for the spring followed by the 2017 Mid-American Conference Championship in Nashport, Ohio.
"I love this year's schedule," Trainor said. "In past years, we play against some of the best teams in the country on really good courses. In the fall there are so many great events, and I try to stay close to home on grasses we are most familiar with. The Wolf Run will be here quick, and we have some work to do before for the opening tournament. I look forward to start preparing the team for competition over the next few weeks!"
Akron opens the 2016 fall season on Saturday, Sept. 11, traveling to Zionsville, Ind., for a two-day event at Wolf Run Golf Club. The Zips return to Ohio for the following two tournaments, beginning with the BearCat Invitational at Coldstream Golf Club on Monday and Tuesday, Sept. 26-27, hosted by the University of Cincinnati. Next, the Zips hold their annual Firestone Invitational at Firestone Country Club's North Course in Akron, Ohio. UA's tournament is scheduled for Monday and Tuesday, Oct. 3-4.
The following week, Akron travels to Pete Dye Golf Course in Bridgeport, W.Va. for the Mountaineer Intercollegiate on Monday and Tuesday, Oct. 10-11, hosted by West Virginia University, and after week off, the Zips wrap-up its fall season with the ODU/OBX Intercollegiate at Kilmarlic Country Club in Outer Banks, N.C. on Sunday-Tuesday, Oct. 23-25.
"After a long layoff, we will be looking forward to getting back on the course in better weather," Trainor said. "We have a great schedule against great competition. Both seasons go fast, but the MAC Championship will be here before we know it. We have a lot of work to do this year, and a lot of goals to accomplish. I love this team, and we will work hard to accomplish our goals collectively."
The Zips open the spring season with a practice trip, site to be determined, before playing its first two tournaments in South Carolina. On Monday and Tuesday, Feb. 27-28, the spring season officially begins at Hilton Head Island with the Wexford Intercollegiate at Wexford Golf Club. Akron returns to Aiken on Monday and Tuesday, March 6-7, for the Palmetto Intercollegiate at the Palmetto Golf Club before heading north to the Seahawk Intercollegiate in Wilmington, N.C. at the Country Club of Landfall on Sunday and Monday, March 19-20.
For the fourth tournament of the spring, Akron travels to Greenville, S.C. for a three-day event at the Furman Intercollegiate on Saturday to Monday, March 25-27, followed by a 12-day layoff.
After the brief break, Akron plays the Irish Creek Golf Course for the Irish Creek Intercollegiate in Charlotte, N.C. on Sunday and Monday, April 9-10. The final tournament of the regular season will be played at Ohio State's Scarlet Course. The Robert Kepler Intercollegiate spans two days on Saturday and Sunday, April 22-23 in Columbus, Ohio.
On Friday, April 28, the 2017 MAC Championships begin in Nashport, Ohio. The Virtues Golf Club will host the three-day championship tournament.
The NCCA Regional Championship is scheduled for Sunday-Wednesday, May 14-17, followed by the NCAA Championships at Rich Harvest Farms Course in Chicago, Ill., on Saturday, May 27 through Saturday, June 3.
The Zips return seven letterwinners, including the defending 2016 Individual MAC Champion in junior George Baylis (Ascot, England). Other returning members include seniors in Zach Gollwitzer (Ballwin, Mo.), Yann Pfeiffer (Saint-Nom-la-Bretèche, France) and J.B. Williams (Danville, Ky.), juniors Chandler Morgan (Lexington, Ky.), and sophomores Jacob Appleby (North Canton, Ohio), Euan Gill (Dingwall, Scotland), and Elliott Grayson (Shelby, N.C.).
